Tromsø: Kvaløya & Sommarøy
Discover the Arctic Wonders of Kvaløya and Sommarøy: Fjords, Reindeer, and Scenic Beauty
Tour description
Start with a pickup from your Tromsø hotel and head to Kvaløya Island, keeping an eye out for reindeer. Your first stop is at Kaldfjord, where you can marvel at the stunning scenery and make the most of photo opportunities. Enjoy chocolate cookies and coffee or tea along the way.
Continue towards Ersfjord, taking in the glacier-scarred landscape, rugged mountains, and the entrance to the Arctic Ocean from Sommarøy. Next, travel along Road 862 to Sommarøy Island, passing through mountainous terrain with its own microclimate.
Cross Lake Kattfjordvatnet, with its mountains and waterfalls. At midday, enjoy views of Kattfjord and its historic Northern Lights observatory. Pass through the communities of Sjøtum and Bogen, stopping at Sandneshamn to admire its bay before crossing the tunnel to Sommarøy Island.
Before crossing the Sommarøy Bridge, take in the views of the Arctic Cathedral (Håja Island). Once on Sommarøy, stop to observe Senja Island. Then, visit a beach to admire the coral brought in by the ocean, and afterwards, stop to photograph the three famous Sommarøy houses reflecting Norwegian architecture.
Finally, sit back and relax on the return drive to Tromsø, or choose to stay in Eidkhosen to enjoy a local lunch at the Eide Handel restaurant on your own. Enjoy a light salmon tasting experience that includes an explanation of salmon history and preparation at the majestic Eiden Handel at Kvaløya supermarket. Experience collaboration with local fishermen, salmon farms, and ranchers (closed on Sundays).
If you choose to stay for lunch, return to Tromsø on bus 42, which takes about 21 minutes.
